What Are Circuit Breakers?
Circuit breakers are an essential part of any home’s electrical system, and some basic knowledge of circuit breakers is important if you want to live in a house or any kind of place where you will have access to the electrical access panels. A circuit breaker is something which protects the electrical system of your home – when there is a problem with the electrical system causing an overload, generally something plugged into the wall which is drawing too much power, the circuit breaker will cut the circuit, causing the power to go out. While this can seem annoying at first, it is much better than allowing everything which is attached to the circuit (i.e. plugged into the circuit in the wall) to fry and possibly having a fire hazard as well. Circuit breakers are important in that they keep your electrical things safe and prevent you from being harmed.
Generally speaking, circuit breakers are relatively small electric switches which are arranged in a panel through which the power lines for a building travel. When you open up the circuit breaker panel you will see a number of these switches lined up in a row. Turning the circuit breaker switches on and off will activate or deactivate the various circuits in the building. When a circuit breaker is tripped, all that you have to do is go down to the panel and flip the switch back on (hopefully, you have removed whatever it was that caused the trip in the first place). Some of the brands of circuit breakers that you can get are Siemens circuit breakers, Cutler Hammer circuit breakers and Square D circuit breakers – now you should know the basics about circuit breakers!
